Vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson was one of the giants of jazz who released an amazing body of work throughout his lifetime, before passing away at age 75 in 2016. The melodic and harmonic beauty of his tunes leaves all who hear them mesmerized.
Guitarist JC Stylles co- lead a tribute group to Bobby Hutcherson with vibraphonist Steve Nelson for a number of years in New York City, featuring some of his alumni, including Peter Washington, Billy Drummond, and Byron Landham. Tonight, although sans vibraphone, he shares some of that repertoire with The Jazz Sanctuary with Tommy See Poy/ Piano Keyboard, Josh Holt/Bass & Joe Vizzone/Drums.

DEBBIE KENNEDY comes from multiple generations of musicians,( you might have heard of her violinist cousin Nigel Kennedy) so it was no surprise when she began piano lessons at 5 years and French Horn at 10. Her secondary education at “The Victorian College of the Arts Technical School” in Melbourne, Australia, included performances with professional orchestras around the State of Victoria. Classically trained, she became smitten by the jazz genre in her mid-teens, but her chosen instrument was a rarity in the jazz world. By twenty, though, Debbie followed the path of previous family members and switched to stringed instruments, specifically the bass, and began studying under the great English bass player, John Gray, in Sydney.
The bass opened up the world of jazz for her, and she began the 2 year Associate Diploma in Jazz at the Conservatorium of Music, Sydney University. Debbie moved to New York in 1998, becoming a member of the Big Band “Diva” as well as touring the US and Europe. She was a regular in Woody Allen’s band at the Carlyle Hotel.
Here she takes us through a musical journey starting off in Duo format with JC Stylles on Guitar, sharing an intimate part of her Jazz Journey, starting out on Double Bass work ,adding a taste of her love for Bossa Nova sung in Portugese, before expanding into a Quartet with the addition of Jason Morphett on Tenor Saxophone & Joe Vizzone on Drums.
